American entertainment has a rather weak representation of Asians in film, and as of recent years, there have been a few projects which are hopefully leading to a surge in doing so on a grander scale. Upcoming film Gook, starring Justin Chon, has been making itself known at festivals and gaining praise, while shows like Fresh Off the Boat are adding to the effort of better representation.
Warner Bros is heading a new film Crazy Rich Asians, based on the best-selling book and directed by Jon M. Chu (Now You See Me 2) and featuring a cast made up of all Asian international actors. The cast includes Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley), Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat), Gemma Chan (Humans), Awkwafina (Neighbors 2 and Ocean’s 8), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and newcomer Henry Golding. The film looks to bring a refreshing take on romantic comedies, with its relatively unknown cast and unique set locations, as it’s being shot in Singapore and Malaysia.
Hopefully the material is original enough to support the working pieces so that we can continue see more diverse efforts in future American films. We’ll be rooting for it to make an impact at the box office when it comes out, whenever that may be.
What do you guys think about a romantic comedy featuring all Asian actors, in an Asian setting? Let’s start a discussion in the comments!
